Coronavirus goes viral: quantifying the COVID-19 misinformation epidemic on Twitter Data Analysis

  • Used Chi-square to determine the association between the type of Tweet and the authenticity of information presented
  • 153 Tweets (24.8%) contained misinformation and 107 Tweets (17.4%) contained unverifiable information
  • Misinformation was more prevalent among unverified Twitter accounts (31% vs. 12.6%)
  • The hashtag “#nCov19” and keyword “COVID-19” saw the least percentage of misinformation
  • The hashtag “#2019_nCOV” saw the highest percentage of misinformation
