Critiquing a Model of the Firm

An influential economic analogy describes firms as 'islands of conscious power' where activities are deliberately planned by managers, existing within an 'ocean of unconscious cooperation' where activities are coordinated spontaneously by the price system. Critically evaluate the limitations of this analogy. Provide and explain one example of an 'ocean-like' (market-style) mechanism operating within a firm, and one example of an 'island-like' (centrally-planned) mechanism operating between legally separate firms.
