Short Answer

Deconstructing the Incentive to Work

A firm pays its workers a wage higher than what they could earn elsewhere to encourage them to work hard. The motivational power of this strategy depends on the value the worker loses if they are fired. Analyze this situation by identifying the two primary elements that determine this value. For each element, describe one factor that could either increase or decrease its significance to the worker.
