Definition of Democracy

Democracy is a political system founded on the principle of granting equal political power to all citizens. It is defined by key characteristics including the protection of individual rights such as freedom of speech, assembly, and the press, and the presence of fair elections in which virtually all adults are eligible to participate. A core tenet of a democracy is that the government must relinquish power if it loses an election.
