*Deinococcus radiodurans* is a deeply branching bacterium. *D. radiodurans* is able to survive in high heat, vacuum, acidity, drought and radiation. Because it is able to survive in these extreme conditions, *D. radiodurans* has been coined the name "Conan the Bacterium".
