A multitude of factors make veterans more prone to developing depression, including limited access to loved ones and a support system, stress during combat, and witnessing the deaths and injuries of comrades.

Studies conducted on a variety of nation's citizens after the events of a war found a rise in many mental disorders, including depression. The most vulnerable groups included women, children, elderly, and those with disabilities. Researchers also noted the increased usage of culture and religion as coping strategies in these areas.
