Design Implications for the Deferred Choices Pattern
Design Implications:
- When possible, don’t accost the user with too many upfront choices in the first place
- Clearly indicate required versus optional fields, and don’t make too many of them required. Let users move on without answering the optional ones.
- Try to separate the high priority questions from the low priority questions, and present the shorter list of high-priority questions first
- Employ the use of good default answers, but remember pre-filled answers still require the user to check them, so there is still some cost to the user
- Allow users to defer questions and easily find and return to them elsewhere at a later time
