Direct Effect

A direct effect is the causal impact of an independent variable (XX) on an outcome variable (YY) that does not pass through a mediator variable (MM). In a causal diagram, this is represented as the direct path X rightarrow Y, as opposed to the indirect path X rightarrow M rightarrow Y.
