Disorganized thinking is characterized by disjointed and incoherent thought processes. This cognitive symptom is typically identified through a person's speech, which may appear illogical, disconnected, or ramble between unrelated topics.

Disorganized Thinking

This category of symptoms involves a range of unusual movements and actions. Examples include becoming excessively active, displaying silly or childlike behaviors like giggling, making odd facial expressions and gestures, or engaging in repetitive, purposeless movements. In some instances, these behaviors can manifest as catatonia, which is characterized by a reduced response to the surrounding environment.

Disorganized or Abnormal Motor Behavior

Confused and disordered thinking and speech, trouble with logical thinking and sometimes bizarre behavior or abnormal movements.

The primary symptoms of schizophrenia are categorized into five main types: hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, disorganized or abnormal motor behavior, and negative symptoms. When the disorder is active, individuals may struggle to differentiate between real and unreal experiences. The severity, duration, and frequency of these symptoms can vary, and severe psychotic symptoms often decrease with age.
