- Scholars believe that membership in a religion and believing in their doctrines and values can help reduce social and political conflicts through the interaction of the different main social groups

- The interaction of different social groups helps reduce awareness of social and political conflicts 

- Religious doctrine is also believed to help stabilize or "mollify" individuals at the bottom of the social and economic social structure regarding their perceived injustices

Doctrines and Values: less likely to participate in contentious collective action

- Scholars believe that some religious doctrines suggest actions that are civic in nature thus if society is aging against what the doctrine considers correct they may be willing to participate in contentious collective action 
    - i.e. Protestant doctrine
- Scholars believe that religious institutions played an important role in the civil rights movement 
-Religious doctrines prescribe a way in which individuals should live if society or other social institutions contradcit a competition maybe be founded

Scholars are divided in whether the doctrine and values of religion will make it more or less likely to organize and/or participate in contentious collective action.

Scholars have not reached a consensus on whether religious groups help induce contentious collective action or help keep social peace and stability. As such three main points are often disagreed on.

1. Do religious doctrines and values make religious groups more or less likely to participate and lunch collective contention? 
2.  Do religious groups reflect and/or reinforce politically-relevant divisions that could affect which party or government group is in charge (possible regime change)?
3. Do religious groups' organizational structures facilitate or prevent contentious collective action?
