During the late phase in long-term potentiation, increased calcium entering the neuron for a longer period, causes an increase in transcription factors. Transcription factors lead to gene expression and the synthesis of proteins. Proteins produced include AMPA receptors and growth factors. The changes during LTP can last 24 hours to a lifetime.

Late Phase in Long-Term Potentiation

The early phase in long-term potentiation creates AMPA receptors for future use. This change only lasts a few hours and a slight increase in calcium is needed to maintain the change.
