A review of 29 studies found that depression in employees is associated with decreased income and higher unemployment rates and disability claims. This mental disorder can negatively impact our economy, which in turn can negatively impact our society.

In a study conducted on 2,267 workers with depression, researchers found that a single leave of absence was attributed to a mild depressive episode, while multiple leave of absences were attributed to recurrent MDD. Thus, the more severe or frequent the depressive episode, the more likely an employee was to take a leave of absence.
