Interactive Linking leads to higher awareness of misinformation compared to Static Illustrated Text. Generally, Interactive Linking appears to be a better approach than Explanatory Annotation, the latter of which has yielded mixed results on its effectiveness.

Effects of Approaches of Presenting Text and Graphical Visualizations on Awareness of Misinformation

Texts were seen as less credible when Interactive Linking and Explanatory Annotations were used as compared to the Static Illustrated text approach.

The parts that are relevant to the graph are taken out of the text and are put as annotations on the graph.

Explanatory Annotation

Text and graphs are separated layout-wise.

Static Illustrated Text

This approach is visually identical to the Static Illustrated Text, but the parts that are relevant to the visualization are highlighted. When putting mouse over those parts, the corresponding aspects of the graph are highlighted (e.g., changing color).
