Major Electron Carriers in ETS

A series of chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred from NADH and FADH2 and passed from one electron carrier to the next until it reaches the final acceptor - the type depending on the type of respiration being performed.

OpenStax Microbiology Textbook

The electron movement within the ETC generates an electrochemical gradient (proton motive force) whose potential energy drives the flow of protons across the membrane through ATP synthase, making ATP. This diffusion of protons across the membrane (into the cytoplasm for prokaryotes and out of the intermembrane space for eukaryotes) also known as chemiosmosis.
