It is important to structure your contents in a way that utilizes accessibility text or, text that is used by screen reader accessibility software. Screen readers are able to read aloud the on-screen text as well as assorted elements (ie. buttons), including both visible and non-visible alternative text.

When using standard platform controls and semantic HTML, apps will automatically contain the markup and code needed to work with a platform's assistive technology. By meeting each platform's accessibility standards and supporting its assistive technology (ie. shortcuts, structure), you can give users an efficient experience. You can test your design with the platform's accessibility settings turned on - this should be done both during and after implementation.

Design for accessibility is often seen by companies as a waste of money because the impression is that people with disabilities make up a small segment of the population. 

When you design for accessibility, you will often find that you create products that are easier for everyone to use not just those with disabilities. Don’t neglect accessibility in the user experience.

Finally, accessible design is now a legal obligation in many jurisdictions including the EU and failure to deliver it may result in fines. In The USA, there have been instances in which companies have been sued due to their failure in complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act on the topic of accessibility of their designs.

Elements of Accessible Design

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is a global standard for web content accessibility, with documents explaining how to make web content more accessible for those with disabilities.  Web content refers to text, images, and sounds, as well as code or markup.  In the WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 Documents, there are guidelines included based on these four principles: “perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust.”
