A complex media is a media that contains undetermined and variable components because it is obtained from extracts and digests of yeasts, meat, or plants. Some examples are nutrient broth, tryptic soy broth (TSB), and brain heart infusion.

Selective media target the growth of specific organisms by supplying important nutrients and suppressing the growth of competitive, undesirable organisms.

Differential media are used to distinguish colonies of different organisms based on the change in color of the media or colony.
