Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC): Virulence Factors
This bacteria injects protein Tir that attaches to intestinal epithelial cells and rearranges the host cell actin from microvilli to pedestals. Genes used in this pedestal formation are encoded on the locus for enterocyte effacement (LEE) pathogenicity island. Tir is also a receptor for surface protein Intimin, produced by the EPEC and which lets the bacteria inhabit the pedestal.
