Entrainment of molecular circadian rhythm

In fruit flies, the light-dark cycle is established simply. Light passes through the fly's body into the brain cells to degrade the Cry protein and start the cycle again. In mammals, the retinal ganglion cells that have melanopsin detect light and release glutamate into the SCN. Glutamate creates a series of events in the SCN cells that leads to the production of Per protein. When the mammal's photoperiod shifts, the Per production that is catalyzed by the light shifts the phase of the molecular clock, which shifts the mammal's behavior.
