Environmental factors and Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Research suggests that behavioral disorders may result from changes to certain parts of the brain. There is also evidence that oppositional defiant disorder correlates to problems with some neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters allow nerve cell communication in the brain. A lack of balance or an inefficient work of these neurotransmitters can impair the brain's ability to send messages, resulting in symptoms.

Biological Factors and Oppositional Defiant Disorder

The genetic component of oppositional defiant disorder is estimated to contribute to 50% of its development. It is common for children and teens with oppositional defiant disorder to have a close family member who suffers from psychological conditions like personality disorders, anxiety disorders, or mood disorders. In addition, oppositional defiant disorder is frequently associated with attention defect/ hyperactive disorder, anxiety, learning disabilities, or depression, indicating genetic connections among these conditions.
