Skin is the largest organ in the human body. It is responsible for receiving the environmental stimuli that we process when perceiving touch and pain. The skin is made up of three separate layers.
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Hypodermis

Epidermis

The dermis is the middle layer of the skin. It contains a rich web of nerve fibers in a network of connective tissue and blood vessels.

Dermis

The hypodermis, also called the subcutaneous tissue, is the innermost layer of the skin. It provides an anchor for muscles, contains Pacinian corpuscles, and helps shape the body.

Tactile receptors detect light touch. There are four types of tactile receptors, which are found primarily in the dermis layer:
- Pacinian Corpuscles
- Meissner Corpuscles
- Merkel's Discs
- Ruffini's Endings
