Heinz's Moral Dilemma is an ethical dilemma in which a man's wife is dying of cancer, and the only cure is beyond his ability to pay for, and the scientist who developed the cure will not negotiate with him. The man ends up breaking into the scientist's home and stealing the cure. The ethical dilemma then becomes: was it moral for the man to break into the scientist's house and steal? The way a person responds to this moral dilemma can help reveal which moral stage they are in terms of Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development. 

Heinz's Moral Dilemma

This moral dilemma has been attributed both to Plato and Socrates, and it goes as follows: a man is given a weapon from a friend, and the friend has the man promise to return it soon. The man then discovers that, upon returning the weapon, his friend plans to use it to harm another person. The moral dilemma the man now faces is whether to return the weapon to keep his promise, but risk harming another person, or to break his promise to his friend and keep the weapon, but protect another person. In terms of moral dilemmas, this one is an easier example, because the moral reasons for not returning the weapon as clearly stronger than the moral reasons for returning it.

An ethical dilemma is a moral situation or problem in which the "solution" or response to the dilemma is complex, potentially unethical, or would require violating a different ethical principle. Ethical dilemmas show up both practically, in workplace settings, and abstractly, such as through thought experiments like the famous "Heinz's Moral Dilemma."
