Evaluating a Policy Statement on Fiscal Stimulus and Trade

A political leader makes the following statement: "To maximize the economic boost from our new government spending program, we must simultaneously encourage free trade by removing barriers to imports. Giving our citizens more choices for how to spend their money will make our stimulus more powerful."

Critique this statement. In your answer, explain the mechanism through which government spending affects total income and how the level of spending on goods from other countries influences this mechanism. Conclude by assessing whether the two policy goals described are complementary or conflicting in the short run.
