Short Answer

Evaluating a Utility Scenario

An economist is studying an individual's preferences for two desirable items: weekly concert tickets and weekly cups of coffee. The economist observes that when the individual has 3 concert tickets and 5 cups of coffee, their satisfaction level is measured as 50 units. However, when the individual is given an additional cup of coffee (for a total of 3 tickets and 6 cups of coffee), their satisfaction level drops to 45 units. Based on the fundamental assumption that more of a desirable item is always better, analyze this observation. Explain which principle is violated and why this outcome is considered inconsistent with standard models of preference.
