Evaluating Bilateral Trade in a Modern Economy

A classmate argues that since two individuals can benefit from specializing and trading directly with each other, a large, modern economy with millions of people could achieve maximum efficiency by simply having everyone make direct, one-on-one trade agreements for all their needs.
