Case Study

Evaluating Farm Productivity

A farm manager is analyzing the performance of two different harvesting teams on identical plots of land. The farm's production process is known to exhibit diminishing average product of labor. The manager has plotted the performance of both teams on a production function graph where the vertical axis is 'Total Grain Harvested (kg)' and the horizontal axis is 'Number of Workers'.

  • Team A used 10 workers and harvested 500 kg of grain.
  • Team B used 20 workers and harvested 800 kg of grain.

The manager concludes, 'Team B is clearly the more productive team because their total harvest was much larger.'

Based on the graphical interpretation of average product, evaluate the manager's conclusion. Is the manager's assessment of productivity correct? Explain your reasoning by describing how the points for Team A and Team B would appear on the graph and what the rays from the origin to these points would signify.
