Evaluating Hiring Strategies

A software company struggles to differentiate between highly productive and less productive job applicants before hiring them. To solve this, they are considering implementing one of two new mandatory requirements for all applicants:

  1. Successfully complete a rigorous, unpaid, three-month coding project that is significantly easier for highly productive individuals to finish.
  2. Pay a non-refundable $5,000 application fee, which is returned only if the applicant is hired.

Analyze which of these two requirements would be a more reliable method for the company to identify the highly productive applicants. Explain your reasoning.
