Evaluating Market-Based Provision of Public Services

An economic commentator argues: 'If markets are efficient at allocating resources for goods like cars and food, they should also be used to allocate all services, including the justice system and primary education. Government involvement only creates inefficiency and should be eliminated.' Critically evaluate this statement. In your response, explain why a society might choose to have the government involved in these areas, even if it accepts that markets are generally effective.
