Evaluating Strategic Business Outcomes

Imagine a scenario with two competing businesses that can each choose to either 'Advertise' or 'Not Advertise'.

  • If both choose 'Not Advertise', they each earn a profit of $50,000.
  • If both choose to 'Advertise', the ads largely cancel each other out, and they each earn a profit of $25,000 after accounting for advertising costs.
  • If one advertises and the other does not, the advertiser captures most of the market and earns $70,000, while the non-advertiser earns only $10,000.

Assume that for each individual business, choosing to 'Advertise' is the best strategy regardless of what the competitor does.

Critique the outcome where both businesses choose to 'Advertise'. In your critique, focus on comparing this outcome to the one where neither business advertises. Explain why, from a collective standpoint, the result of each business pursuing its own best interest might be considered a failure.
