Evaluating the Consequences of Price-Setting Ability

A pharmaceutical company develops and patents a new, life-saving drug. As the sole producer for the duration of the patent, the company sets a price for the drug that is significantly higher than its cost of production. Evaluate this situation from the perspective of the company, the consumers who need the drug, and overall economic efficiency. In your evaluation, justify whether the company's ability to set the price is ultimately beneficial or detrimental to society as a whole.
