Evaluating the Validity of Utility Functions

An economist observes a consumer's choices between bundles of two goods: concert tickets (C) and restaurant meals (R). The consumer's stated preferences are as follows:

  1. They prefer the bundle (2C, 3R) over the bundle (1C, 4R).
  2. They prefer the bundle (3C, 1R) over the bundle (2C, 3R).

Two different utility functions have been proposed to represent these preferences:

  • Function X: U(C, R) = 2C + R
  • Function Y: U(C, R) = C² + R

Evaluate both functions. Determine which function, if any, is a valid representation of the consumer's preferences. Justify your conclusion by showing your calculations and explaining how the results align or misalign with the core purpose of a utility function.
