Evaluating Work Coordination Models

A software development company is launching a critical new project. The CEO is considering two different ways to organize the team of 20 developers:

  1. Strategy A: A project manager will be appointed to break down the project into specific tasks, assign each task to a specific developer based on their skills and the project's timeline, and directly oversee the work.
  2. Strategy B: The project's requirements will be published internally. Developers will then independently choose or "bid" on the tasks they want to work on, negotiating hand-offs and integration points with each other.

Critique Strategy B from the perspective of how work is typically and effectively coordinated within a firm. In your evaluation, explain why Strategy A is generally the more conventional and often more successful model for a business entity.
