Evidence of self-handicapping motivation
One study indicates that individuals with SAD did not report the impulse to use marijuana after or before a social event took place, but experienced the strongest urges during the social situation itself, proving evidence in favor of the theory that marijuana use functions to control what impressions an individual has on other people. Moreover, social anxiety is strongly associated with self-handicapping behaviors interpreted to act as impressions management.
