Example: First Five Terms of an=4n3a_n = 4n - 3

Find the first five terms of the sequence whose general term is an=4n3a_n = 4n - 3 by substituting n=1,2,3,4,5n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5:

  • a1=4(1)3=1a_1 = 4(1) - 3 = 1
  • a2=4(2)3=5a_2 = 4(2) - 3 = 5
  • a3=4(3)3=9a_3 = 4(3) - 3 = 9
  • a4=4(4)3=13a_4 = 4(4) - 3 = 13
  • a5=4(5)3=17a_5 = 4(5) - 3 = 17

The first five terms are 1,5,9,13,171, 5, 9, 13, 17. Each term is obtained by replacing nn in the general term with the corresponding counting number and then performing the arithmetic.
