Example of a Social Trap: The Post-WWII Nuclear Arms Race

The nuclear arms race between the United States and the former Soviet Union after World War II serves as a classic example of a social trap. Although the proliferation of nuclear weapons was detrimental to the long-term interests of both nations, the dynamic of the situation compelled each country to continue producing more weapons to protect itself from the other, locking them in a dangerous and costly cycle.
