This image illustrates how fMRI technology can be used to investigate the differences in brain activity between a normal, healthy brain and a diseased brain. In the case of Alzheimer's, it makes sense that that a large portion of the middle brain would lack neural activity(blood flow) due to the characteristic symptoms of the disease including memory loss, confusion, and making foggy connections.
