Example of Converting Reserves to Currency for ATM Replenishment

A practical application of the convertibility between reserves and currency occurs when a commercial bank needs to restock its ATMs. The bank can exchange a portion of its electronic reserves at the central bank for physical banknotes to meet customer withdrawal demands. Conversely, if a bank accumulates excess currency, it can deposit it at the central bank to increase its reserves.
