Example of Yen Volatility and Depreciation (2012-2024)

Figure 7.4 demonstrates the high variability characteristic of a flexible exchange rate, using the Japanese yen as an example. The data shows significant fluctuations in the yen-to-dollar rate in both the short term (daily) and long term. Specifically, between 2012 and 2024, the yen underwent a major depreciation against the US dollar, as the number of yen required to purchase one dollar almost doubled.
