Examples of Social Applications of Theory of Mind in Children

Between the ages of 3 and 5, children use their developing theory-of-mind (TOM) to navigate various social situations. Examples of these applications include:

  • Teasing others: Children use their awareness of others' perspective and feelings to play teasing or joking games.
  • Persuasion: A child can attempt to convince a parent to buy them a candy bar by adapting their arguments to the parent's likely reactions and thoughts.
  • Understanding sibling anger: A child can understand why their sibling is angry by recognizing that their sibling possesses independent emotions and viewpoints distinct from their own.
