Social psychologists study how the presence of others impacts a person's behavior and reactions across a wide variety of everyday contexts. For example, they might examine how an athlete's performance changes during a game, how a police officer reacts while on duty, or how a worshiper behaves when attending a religious service.

The presence of other people, whether real or perceived, significantly impacts an individual's actions, thoughts, and feelings. A core principle in social psychology is that an individual's behavior and reactions are influenced by who else is present in a given situation, as well as by the overall composition of the social groups involved. Individuals often adapt their behavior to conform to the social situation they are in, an adjustment that is particularly evident in new or uncertain environments where they look to others for cues on how to act.
