Explaining Preference Shifts

A consumer's budget and the prices of goods remain unchanged. However, after observing the consumption habits of a group they admire, their satisfaction from owning certain high-status items increases relative to other goods. Explain why this change in the consumer's mindset results in an entirely new set of indifference curves, rather than simply a movement to a different point on their original set of curves.
