Short Answer

Explaining the Shape of a Wealth Distribution Curve

A graph can be used to visualize how wealth is distributed within a group. On this graph, a straight 45-degree diagonal line represents a system of perfect equality. A curve that bows away from this line indicates inequality. On the pirate ship Royal Rover, the rules for dividing captured treasure were as follows: the captain and quartermaster each received two shares, key officers received between one-and-a-quarter and one-and-a-half shares, and all other crew members received one share. Based only on these rules, explain why the curve representing this distribution would lie very close to the 45-degree line.
