The conjugation pilus transfers the DNA from cell to cell during conjugation. It also serves to bring cells closer together to share the DNA. The conjugation pilus is encoded on the F plasmid.

A well studied plasmid is the F plasmid. This is required for conjugation. The F plasmid, or fertility factor, codes for the conjugation pilus and replication of the plasmid. This pilus allows for donating this plasmid to other cells.
