The extent to which a student actually participates in an activity. For example, participating in a science experiment and following instructions.

Domains of Student Engagement: Behavioral

The negative or positive feelings about the activity presented to the student. For example, a student that has historically low motivation in STEM may be less emotionally engaged in an experiment.

Domains of Student Engagement: Emotional

The intellectual investment or commitment to the activity. For example, a student with intrinsic curiosity about the functions of the body is going to be more inclined to engage in activities related to anatomy. 

Domains of Student Engagement: Cognitive

Engagement is defined as the extent to which a student takes part in educationally effective practices. For example, a student's engagement could be measured by how actively they may take notes or receive information being taught.

In an educational context, motivation can be a large factor in the success outcomes of a student. Motivation in pedagogy is considered to be influenced by several aspects:
1.) Intrinsic Measures
2.) Self-Determination
3.) Self-Efficacy
4.) Anticipated Career or Grade Outcomes


Factors in Educational Motivation

Simulated learning environments can combine motivation with active learning strategies (e.g. microtasking) to produce favorable outcomes for students in academic settings. Students that are considered "low-achieving" in a learning discipline are able to develop strategies through models to ultimately learn at similar rates to "high-achieving" counterparts.
