Prevalence of fibromyalgia seems to increase with age with a maximum in patients over 60 years old, but fibromyalgia affects people of all ages.

There is no way to get exact statistics of the amount of people affected by fibromyalgia, but studies have found a few patterns in regard to who has a higher chance of receiving the diagnosis. The prevalence in the population is most likely lower than 2-4% in the United States.

More women are affected by fibromyalgia than men. Based on a US-based insurance claims database, there are 11.28 cases for every 1,000 women and 6.88 cases for every 1,000 men, per year.
