Inflation in Spain and Germany After Joining the Eurozone (1999-2023) [Figure 7.12]

This line chart displays the inflation rates for Spain and Germany from 1999 to 2023. At the start of this period, Spain's inflation was approximately 2%. The data reveals that while both countries' inflation rates fluctuated, Spain's exhibited greater volatility with higher peaks and deeper troughs. Notably, between 1999 and 2007, Spanish inflation consistently ran slightly higher than Germany's. The chart captures the impact of major economic shocks, including a sharp fall in Spanish inflation to below zero around 2008 and another significant dip near 2014. A dramatic surge is visible around 2021, when Spain's inflation rate approached 10%, after which both countries saw a decline by 2023.
