Finding the Intercepts of y=x24x5y = x^2 - 4x - 5

To find the intercepts of the parabola given by the equation y=x24x5y = x^2 - 4x - 5:

Finding the y-intercept: Let x=0x = 0 and solve for yy:

y=024(0)5y = 0^2 - 4(0) - 5 y=5y = -5

The y-intercept is the point (0,5)(0, -5).

Finding the x-intercepts: Let y=0y = 0 and solve the resulting quadratic equation for xx:

0=x24x50 = x^2 - 4x - 5

Solve by factoring the trinomial:

0=(x5)(x+1)0 = (x - 5)(x + 1)

Apply the Zero Product Property by setting each factor equal to zero:

x5=0orx+1=0x - 5 = 0 \quad \text{or} \quad x + 1 = 0 x=5orx=1x = 5 \quad \text{or} \quad x = -1

The x-intercepts are the points (5,0)(5, 0) and (1,0)(-1, 0).
