It was found that when young women view fitspiration content, the levels of appearance comparison that they engaged in was strongly correlated with body dissatisfaction and mood. This implies that an increase in body dissatisfaction and negative mood occurs as a result of individuals engaging in appearance comparison.

One study found that individuals who viewed ten minutes of fitspiration did not demonstrate an increase in body dissatisfaction compared to those who watched ten minutes of neutral art TikToks. However, those who viewed fitspiration videos indicated an increase in negative mood and were more likely to engage in appearance comparison.
