Fogel's Analysis of Egalitarianism

In The Fourth Great Awakening and the Future of Egalitarianism (2000), economic historian Robert Fogel argues that the focus of the American egalitarian impulse has shifted over time: from securing political rights, to redistributing material/economic resources, and most recently to the distribution of 'spiritual resources' — immaterial assets such as self-esteem, a sense of purpose, and family stability. Fogel treats this shift as the defining feature of what he calls the Fourth Great Awakening.
