Food deserts

Food deserts are low income areas where its residents have little access to healthy foods. Food deserts are more likely to have fast food chains and convenience stores than grocery stores. The food options at fast food restaurants and convenience stores are relatively lower quality and contain higher saturated and trans fats and higher calories. Thus, those who reside in food deserts are more likely to have poor diets and nutrition. An individual who resides in a food desert will have a higher risk of developing obesity.
