Generates slow wave sleep. The isolated forebrain doesn’t show REM sleep, indicating forebrain alone is responsible for SWS without contributions from lower regions.

Sleep-wake cycles are regulated by several brain areas working together. The thalamus, hypothalamus, and pons are key regions in this coordination: the hypothalamus includes the SCN, described as the body's biological clock, other hypothalamic nuclei work with the thalamus to regulate slow-wave sleep, and the pons helps regulate rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

Forebrain System

A ventral region of the forebrain implicated in consciousness and sleep. Constant slow wave sleep in the isolated forebrain is resultant from the basal forebrain. Electrical stimulation of the basal forebrain can induce SWS sleep, whereas lesions can suppress sleep. Within the basal forebrain, neural circuits regulate activity of GABA-ergic neurons that project their axons to two targets: tuberomammillary nucleus and the reticular formation.

Basal Forebrain

A region in the pons just ventral of the locus coeruleus that triggers REM sleep. One of its jobs is to inhibit motor neurons. It does this via Glutamatergic neurons that excite neurons in the medulla, which projects axons down the spinal cord to release GABA and glycine to inhibit spinal motor neurons. Hence the flaccid muscles during REM sleep. Lesions to this area can abolish the loss of muscle tone in REM sleep, leading to acting out dreams.
